R.I.P. "Dissent is the Highest Form of Patriotism."

Democrats gathered today, on the eve of President-elect Obama's inauguration, to remember the often misattributed quote that has buoyed their spirits over the last eight years. These seven words have at times served as an excuse for incivility and at other times asa facade to cover emotional and irrational invective so exagerated as to cross over into the realm of the ridiculous.  Yet, with the coronation of President Obama, there is little use for this kind of sentiment in the land of change and hope (fluffy unicorns and magical fairies are on back order, but please be patient).

So, it is with a heavy heart that I say, rest in peace "Dissent is the Highest Form of Patriotism"; long live "put aside politics"- or whatever other incarnation this general sentiment may take.  I predict that the land of hope and change will prove to be very similar to the land ruled by the    E-V-I-L President Bush.  The same wars will continue (and in some cases escalate), the same problems of unemployment will continue or get worse, terrorism will remain a threat that perplexes those in power, and Iran and North Korea will remain a major problem whether they sit at the bargaining table or not.  However, don't expect many complaints from the majority party, because it isn't about principles, it is about controlling the levers of power.  How odd, the party that spent the last eight years preaching about the virtue of dissent will now spend the next four asking us all to unite and get behind the president.  It would be funny if it weren't so ridiculous.

Since Obama is telling people "not to panic," it would be wise for all of us to start panicing and going to the doctor for medicine before it disappears.

One other point. It is the current administration that is actually putting the brakes on creative research by constantly hinting at government intervention. Nothing can kill innovation in drug discovery like the heavy hand of the US government. They need to butt out and let scientists do their job instead of hanging over their shoulders and trying to regulate everything and anything they do. Obama has only himself and his Marxist tendencies to blame if the US stops producing the world's best medicines.

Last point. If ANYONE dies in the United States because of this government's "political" response to a major flu outbreak, there will be hell to pay. They need to call a spade a spade and put the source of this epidemic where it lies: MEXICO.

I will begin by asking you anonymous (if that is indeed your real name), "are you talking to me?"

If no, then disregard the following. If yes, then let's take a moment to look at the predictions I made eight or so months ago:

"The same wars will continue (and in some cases escalate)"

How many troops are in Iraq? How many more troops are in Afghanistan? How many more will be sent to Afghanistan?

"the same problems of unemployment will continue or get worse"

Where is unemployment at these days? Oh right, considerably worse.

"terrorism will remain a threat that perplexes those in power, and Iran and North Korea will remain a major problem whether they sit at the bargaining table or not."

Who just got busted sending prohibited arms shipments to Iran? The answer, North Korea. And who is no closer to shutting down their nuclear program despite President Obama's criticism of the United States past diplomatic blunders (as well as Pres. Obama's current diplomatic attempts)? Well that was a trick question, since I would have accepted North Korea or Iran.

"However, don't expect many complaints from the majority party, because it isn't about principles, it is about controlling the levers of power.
How odd, the party that spent the last eight years preaching about the virtue of dissent will now spend the next four asking us all to unite and get behind the president."

And that is exactly how the last several months have gone. As President Obama pursued policies that were near carbon copies of Bush policies the Democratic party didn't say a peep. Why? Because when your guy does it, it ain't wrong. At least that is how the game is played in Washington.

And for those of us independent voters it is a shame to see principles sold out just to support a political party. All the talk of hope and change have thus far resulted in a pretty run of the mill left-of-center democratic presidency (something akin to Bill Clinton's first year or so in office).

And certainly we don't look as ridiculous as the Bush haters. After all, we don't wear those ridiculous masks, we don't dress in pink, and we most certainly don't wear "Buck Fush" (or in this case Obama) t-shirts. ;-)
